SD’S BIGGEST BRAAI BEATS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD
MBABANE – Despite popular belief that braai vleis is the domain of South Africa, Swaziland has beaten its neighbouring country by becoming the braai champion masters.
Swaziland has broken the record and has made it through to the Guinness World Book of Records, in the category ‘Most people cooking simultaneously’. The record was broken on July 22, 2016 as 3 250 people took time to braai simultaneously for 30 minutes, this was during the Swaziland’s Biggest Braai held at the SIMPA Grounds.
All along the record had been held by Poland and it stood at 2 850, meaning Swaziland managed to beat the record by 400 more people.
Johan Lues, Buy and Save Spar Operations Manager confirmed that Swaziland had broken the record.
“We are excited that people came in numbers to attend the event and managed to beat the Guinness World Record. Those who attended the event enjoyed themselves and the experience was a good one for most of them,” he said.
He mentioned that had people come early, the numbers could have even been more.
“At the time when the braai started, there were still more people who were waiting for the braai packs. People should remember that in as much as we all want to be together, this is a competition and we have to follow the rules and regulations of that competition,” he said.
Lues said they were looking at improving the numbers, thus urging people to prepare themselves early.
“We want to improve the event every year and it is the reason why we will try and make sure that the public participates fully. We also want to continue breaking the record every year.”
