MALKERNS – The MTN BUSHFIRE this year celebrated a dynamic decade of music, culture, arts and activism as one of the continent’s leading festivals. Yesterday the festival came to a close with one of Africa’s iconic artists, Oliver Mtukudzi.

Mtukudzi who was the main act on the day had fans eagerly waiting to see his performance. However, by 2.40pm the artist was still not on stage as the programme stated, instead  the eclectic group Rudimentals, took over and kept  the crowd entertained till 5pm.

Shouting

At this point the audience then became weary and started shouting for Oliver Mtukudzi to come on stage, “We want Mtukudzi’’, was the cry heard across the lawn of the main stage but the MC Anacondza calmed everyone down and assured them that the artist was backstage and ready to perform, and the crowd applauded.

The MC explained that the hectic traffic at the border gate on Sunday was  the main cause for the Zimbabwean born musician and human rights activist’s delay for his performance.

After being introduced by Jiggs Thorne, who had just delivered a speech in appreciation of the MTN BUSHFIRE team, the crowd went wild with excitement to finally have the star they have been waiting in anticipation for almost the whole afternoon.

People who were seated in the VIP area moved from their plush seats  to the lawn and  joined the crowd in true festival spirit. They  danced and sand to Oliver’s performance throughout his act.

With his husky voice, Mtukudzi, on the night made fun lovers sing along to his songs, Wasakara, Ndima Ndapendza and Todi.
“If I told you the whole truth, the main reason for coming to Bushfire was so I get to witness my favourite musician, Oliver perform,” one reveller confessed.

It was quite evident though that a lot of people had been drawn to the Sunday line-up because of the legendary Zimbabwean artist. Oliver Mtukudzi performed till 6.45pm and left fun lovers screaming and applauding.
