MBABANE – South African group The Soil’s hit song ‘Susan’, became one couple’s lifetime memory on Saturday night when Phumlani Nkambule proposed to his fiancée Susan in front of over 2 000 screaming fans.

The couple awas the highlight of the group’s performance as they ended their two-hour long performance by calling up Susan, who had no idea at the time of the lovely romantic gesture that awaited her.
As she shyly entered the centre stage, her fiancé followed her and without saying a word, got down on one knee and popped the question.

The crowd screamed for her to say yes and that was the answer an excited Phumlani had been hoping to hear. The Soil immediately burst into song, singing ‘Susan’ as the crowd sang along, joining in on the engagement celebrations.

Disbelief

Susan, who is from South Africa, had initially come to Swaziland to support her boyfriend Phumlani, who works for the Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA). “I cannot even speak properly as you see I am shaking with disbelief. All I know is I am so happy and feel so lucky to be engaged to be married to a man I love,” she said as she held on tight to her fiancé.
On another note, The Soil proved why it is regarded as one of South Africa’s best a capella groups, when they closed the FNB SmoothFest with an electrifying two-hour performance.

The group entered the stage at exactly midnight accompanied, by deafening screams from the crowd. They took to the stage with their song ‘Sedilaka’ and continued to mesmerise the crowd with their hit songs including ‘Bhomba’, ‘Inkwekwezi’, ‘Lakushona Ilanga’ and many more.

As they introduced themselves during mid performance, it was interesting to hear female vocalist Buhlebendalo Mda trying to speak fluent SiSwati. “Ngiyanivusela, sijabulile kuba la. Ngitama siSwati phela.”
Loosely translated; “I greet you all, we are happy to be here. I am trying to speak siSwati,” she said to resounding screams from the fans. The group bowed out at 2:30am as they thanked their fans for what they called a fired up session.
