MBABANE – ICT Minister Dumisani Ndlangamandla has rectified the ‘error’ where he appointed two individuals to the position of SCCOM board chairperson.

The Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) minister made the correction in legal notice number 110 of 2018 in exercise of powers conferred by section 10 of the Eswatini Communications Commission Act of 2013.

“Legal notice number 95 of 2018 is amended in section two by deleting the word chairperson and replacing it with the word vice-chairperson,” read the legal notice issued on Friday last week. It should, however, be clarified that the minister said the notice would be deemed to have come into force on May 29, 2018.

Ndlangamandla had first appointed Sipho Shongwe to the position of chairman at the Swaziland Communications Commission (SCCOM) which, among other duties, is responsible to issue licences for mobile operators.

However, gazette (number 95) indicated that Polycarp Dlamini, who was a football administrator and former manager for national team Sihlangu and premier league side Mbabane City, was also the leader of the Board.
Dlamini’s first reaction when contacted yesterday was to congratulate Ndlangamandla on the correction.

 Letter

He pointed out that in actual fact even his appointment letter as the replacement of the late Gideon Mahlalela had reflected that he would serve as vice-chairperson of the board.
“I had not claimed chairmanship of the board after all,” Dlamini claimed.

The director of a construction company, Homeboyz Construction, also reiterated his commitment to diligently serve at the SCCOM board and ultimately improve the telecommunications industry in Eswatini for the better.
