MBABANE – A project which is bound to see the decrease in vehicle accidents caused by livestock has won the Enactus Swaziland National Competition 2018.

The Supa Nova project is a project by 28 students from the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) Faculty of Education. After researching on the number of accidents caused by livestock on the country’s roads, particularly at night, the students came up with their business concept.

The Supa Nova is a reflector belt livestock farmers can put on their cattle in order to make them visible at night. The belt is made from reflector material and belts from old back packs which livestock can wear on their necks.
Currently, the project benefits eight women from Ngculwini in the Manzini region, who have sewing skills. The women are the ones responsible for sewing these belts.

The belt is sold at Khuba Traders in Manzini for only E25.
The SANU students were competing with their counterparts from the SANU Siteki campus during the final rounds of the competition which was held last Saturday.

The Siteki Campus students were crowned the first runners up.  The SANU Faculty of Education students will now compete in the World Cup which will be held in Silicon Valley, California, United Stated of America.
The Enactus World Cup will take place on October 9-11.

The SANU Faculty of Education team’s Financial Manager, Mandlenkhosi Dlamini explained that it had taken them a year to design and implement their project. He said they sat down and identified some challenges that were faced by the country.
“We noticed that livestock caused a number of accidents,” he said.

He said they then came up with the solution to the challenge, which was their reflector belt.
He said they designed the belt, and further piloted the project at a homestead in Malindza which was owned by a livestock farmer.
“We are so humbled by winning the competition. As a team, we are united and that is the spirit of Enactus,” he said.

He said they were hoping livestock farmers would embrace the project in order to change the lives of the beneficiaries.
For their effort, the students received E10 000 for being the champions and E2 000 for being the team of the year. They also received E50 000 for preparation for their trip to California.

The team’s faculty advisors were also crowned the best faculty advisors, and pocketed E6 000.
Meanwhile, SANU Siteki Campus had a project called ‘Sisonkhe Irrigations Systems’ whereby they came up with a system which would help save water when people are watering their fields.

On June 23, 2018, 12 teams participated in the preliminary finals, where six teams were picked to compete in the final rounds. The six teams were VOCTIM, SANU Faculty of Education, Uniswa Mbabane and Luyengo Campuses and William Pitcher.

The teams were divided into League One and League Two, and the two SANU teams faced each other in the finals, where the Faculty of Education became the overall winners.
