‘CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF ACTION FOR BIODIVERSITY’

MBABANE – The year 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Since

The convention on Biological Diversity was inspired by the world community’s growing commitment to sustainable development. From 1988 to 1992 began the intergovernmental negotiations that started the preparations and development of an international legal instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.


This work culminated on May 22, 1992 with the Nairobi Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The convention was opened for signature on June 5, 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Rio “Earth Summit”).


It remained open for signature until June 4, 1993, by which time it had received 168 signatures. The Convention entered into force on December 29, 1993, which was 90 days after the 30th ratification.


The first session of the Conference of the Parties was scheduled for November 28 – December 9, 1994 in the Bahamas. To date, with 196 Parties, the convention has near universal participation among countries.


The 25th anniversary of the convention presents a unique opportunity to highlight the achievements of its objectives at global and national levels. The results are considerable;
