MBABANE – It was raining money yesterday as government raked in about E3 million in less than two hours.

This was during the government auction sale of motor vehicles which was held at the Central Transport Administration (CTA) where dozens of bidders contested for 103 lots that went under the hammer on the day.

Vehicles bidded for included immobile police vehicles and others from different government departments. Car models included, but not limited to BMW, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Kia, Isuzu, Ford, Land Rover, and Nissan. The highest selling lot was a Mercedes P/Line Horse which sold at E210 000 while the lowest was a Toyota Camry sedan which was sold at E4 000.

One of the bidders was Lugongolweni Member of Parliament Joseph Souza who, however, did not successfully bid for any of the vehicles. Souza in an interview stated that he was hoping to drive home one of the trucks that were up for grabs.
He said he could not successfully bid for one because they were expensive. The trucks ranged between E32 000 for a water tanker and E79 000 for a Flat Truck. Tippers were auctioned at around E32 000.

“I was hoping to buy a tipper so to have something when I retire,” Souza said.
Souza mentioned that the vehicles were in good condition and successful bidders would get value for money.
He said that the auction was different from what used to happen in previous years as the government garage was well prepared. In the past, bidders complained about the vehicles having missing parts especially after the auction.
“This year the arrangements were better as no one will be allowed to enter the auction area in the absence of police,” explained Souza.
