MBABANE – Swaziland, through the Construction Industry Council (CIC) has made doing business in Swaziland more difficult.

This has been done by the introduction of a requirement that all new construction projects be registered with the council and that a levy payment be made.

This was a strong observation of the World Bank which the global lender made through its 15th edition of the Ease of Doing Business Report 2018 titled ‘Reforming to Create Jobs’ released on Tuesday afternoon.
Through this, the World Bank has ranked Swaziland at 112 which shows that the country has regressed from its 2017 rank. It was ranked 111 out of 190 economies.

Through this, the CIC will stand accused of majorly contributing in making the country a less attractive or a poor investor friendly economy in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The Ease of Doing Business Report is one of the yardsticks used by investors in measuring the conduciveness of a country’s business environment.

It is regarded as the best measurement by most investors.  Therefore the country’s poor ranking in this regard, put it at a competitive disadvantage in the southern African region more so because all countries in the region are scrambling for the same investors. Regionally, the country is ranked 9th out of 18 countries. On top is Mauritius who is regarded as Africa’s fastest growing economy. It is followed by Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Seychelles, Lesotho, Namibia and Malawi respectively.

Among the members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) who are Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland and South Africa, the Kingdom is ranked poor. This means the business environment is not as good as the other countries.
Other contributors to the poor ranking are government’s constant failure to enforce contract. Enforcing of contracts pertains to the delayed payment of suppliers.
