MBABANE - President of the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) Maxwell Dlamini has been denied scholarship by the government Scholarship Selection Board.

Dlamini who is a fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Swaziland was among the 12 students who had applied for further sponsorship from the Swazi government after completing their Diploma in Commerce.

Dlamini said he only knew that he had been denied the scholarship last week Thursday when he had gone for an interview with other students.

He said when he arrived for the interview the Scholarship Selection Board members started questioning him on his court case which is still pending in a court of law and his involvement with the Swaziland National Union of Students.

"They told me that they will not award me the scholarship due to my involvement with the Swaziland National Union of Students and because of the pending court case. All the other 12 students who were with me on that day were awarded the scholarship," he said.

He said he was still going to engage the Ministry of Labour and Social Security as he strongly believed the Scholarship Selection Board members had no grounds for denying him the scholarship. Dlamini suspected that he was being victimised for his dissenting political views.

"This is one of the reasons we (students) wanted the Scholarship Policy to be thrown into the dustbin of history. All students in the country deserve to be awarded scholarship by government regardless of their dissenting political views as they will repay the money in one way or the other ," he said.

Dlamini said he still does not understand why he was denied the scholarship as he obtained good results which meant he was automatically eligible.

He said Commerce was one of the courses included in the list of those that government said were a priority.
