Cop charged with 5 counts
MANZINI - The police officer who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Riverstone Mall heist has been charged with five counts.
Mfundo Tsabedze (27) of Mali-ndza appeared before the Manzini Senior Magistrate Florence Msibi yesterday charged with , murder, attempted murder, robbery, theft and defeating the course of justice.
Mfundo has been charged with the murder of William Tsabedze, and the attempted murder of Sibusiso Malindzisa, both men being employees of Cash Security Services.
On arrival for his court appearance Mfundo was escorted by plain-clothes officers from the Serious Crimes Unit (Luk-hozi).
He was transported in a Totoya Quantum with tinted windows.
The accused was dressed in a black Polo jersey and jeans and looked calm, as his attorney took instructions inside the courtroom.
The charge sheet outlining all the counts Mfundo is charged with was not read yesterday.
His attorney, Sabelo Bhembe from Bhembe Attorneys requested that his client be remanded at the Malkerns Young Person Correctional (YPC) as there were awaiting-trial prisoners he had dealt with during investigations kept in the other correctional institutions.
The Senior Public Prosecutor, Sabelo Mdluli and Bhembe consulted with the senior magistrate for almost 10 minutes before it was announced that the court had accepted the attorney’s application that Mfundo be kept at the YPC.
Before his arrest, Mfundo was deployed under the Criminal Investigation Department where he handled murder, robbery, housebreaking and theft cases in Manzini.
Swazi TV journo implicated
MANZINI- Swazi Television Authority (STVA) journalist Sibusiso Ngubane has been implicated in one of the offences alleged to have been committed by police officer, Mfundo Tsabedze.
In the fifth count, Tsabedze is alleged to have defeated the course of justice.
It is alleged that Ngubane received a phone call from Tsabedze on his way to the police station where he (Ngubane) had been called for questioning on the matter.
Tsabedze is alleged to have requested Ngubane to give out false information during the questioning or interview so as to derail or mislead the police investigations.
It was gathered that the police got to know about this information through the phone call made between Ngubane and Tsabedze.
