MALINDZA – An old woman estimated to be around 100 years old was burnt to death while asleep inside her house on Sunday at about 7pm.

The deceased Mthathe Tsabedze (born Maziya) was the mother of Seven Tsabedze – the Malindza Constituency Councillor (Bucopho).

In an interview yesterday, Tsabedze said his mother had gone to visit one of his brothers Madvodzelibandla Tsabedze when she was killed by the inferno.

"We suspect that the fire was a result of a burning candle left unattended inside the house," he stated. He further said: "Because of her age, it would have been practically impossible to run away from the fire."

He said it was already too late by the time members from the Fire and Emergency Services arrived to extinguish the inferno.

The deceased, according to Tsabedze, will be buried on Saturday after a vigil on Friday at her parental home at Malindza.

Police Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent Stephen Dlamini, confirmed the incident adding that police are still investigating.

"We are still investigating since we have not yet established the cause of the fire.

"However, there are suspicions that the fire might have been started by a candle," he said.

Meanwhile, Mpoloneni Member of Parliament, Nicodemus Mashwama, has sent a message of condolences to the Tsabedze family.

Mashwama described what had befallen the family as shocking and traumatic.

The legislator promised to visit the homestead today.
