Divine intervention saves gospel artist
MBABANE – Gospel artist Bongani Simelane missed death by a whisker yesterday when a large tree at the Mbabane Golf Course fell on his car.
Simelane was driving towards Eveni along Mantsholo Road when the tree tumbled down from the golf course section right into the middle of the road.
The large tree trunk landed hard on the bonnet of the artist’s vehicle, a Nissan sedan, causing extensive damage to the engine.
The windscreen was also shattered but Simelane was not injured at all, save for some small glass fragments that hit his face.
The four workmen were tasked with felling burnt and dried trees that had already become a danger to passers-by and it fell in the wrong direction.
No warning signs had been placed on the road to warn motorists that trees nearby were being cut.
Simelane, who appeared slightly shaken by the accident, said: "I was just driving when all of a sudden there was a loud bang. I was shocked and didn’t know what was happening. When I returned to my full senses I saw a tree trunk lying across my bonnet."
He stepped out of the vehicle as the workmen rushed to the scene while other motorists who drove by shortly after the accident stopped to see if he was alright.
"I really thank God I survived. When I woke up this morning I had a feeling that something was not right and so I prayed more fervently than usual," said Simelane.
Meanwhile, the workmen admitted that the mistake was on their part as they did not communicate well among themselves.
One of them was on the phone while the other cut the tree using a chainsaw.
"We thought the tree would fall in the opposite direction from the road and remain within the golf course section, but to our surprise it didn’t," said one of the men.
Mbabane Municipal Council PRO, Bongani Dlamini did not immediately respond to a questionnaire sent to him yesterday as he was said to be in a meeting.
