Policeman arrested for drink-driving
NHLANGANO - A police officer was arrested by his colleagues for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Nhlanhla Hlatshwako (48) based at the Nhlangano Police Station, was nabbed on Saturday near Evelyn Baring High School by the Nhlangano traffic police.
He appeared yesterday before Magistrate Musa Nxumalo while Fikile Dlamini represented the Crown. He is also charged with driving without due care and attention and thus caused an accident. He elected to conduct his own defence and pleaded guilty.
Magistrate Nxumalo found him guilty of contravening Section 91(1) as read with Section 122(2) of the Road Traffic Act of 2007 and contravening Section 89(1) as read with Section 122(7) of the Road Traffic Act of 2007.
The charge sheet also states that the police officer was driving his Toyota Corolla sedan at high speed and failed to apply brakes on time.
In mitigation, Hlatshwako told Nxumalo he had seven children who were attending school and said he was remorseful for driving while drunk.
He was sentenced to a fine of E1 500 or spend one year in jail.
The sentence was suspended for three years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence.
Other people convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol were Gcina Khumalo, Mbongeni Ndwandwe and Thothi Nkwanyane.
