MANZINI – Chairman of the Logoba Community Police, Simon Masina, was arrested for drink-driving on Friday night.

Masina was arrested by Matsapha police near Lusush-wana.

He told Manzini Magistrate Dumisa Mazibuko that his arrest had robbed him of an opportunity to cash in on a E1 000 reward offered by the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).

"SEC announced that anyone who will provide information for the arrest of thieves will be rewarded E1 000.

"When I heard that someone was stealing power cables near the Jesus Calls Worship Centre, I rushed there, only to be arrested by the police for drink-driving before reaching the crime scene.

"I tried to tell them I was rushing to arrest criminals, but they insisted that I had also broken the law."

Masina said he desperately needed the E1 000 reward to buy new loin skins as the ones he had were worn out.

When asked how he got to commit the offence, Masina said he had made traditional brew for ancestors at his home where he also took a sip.

In mitigation he asked the magistrate to be lenient with him as he promised to protect his home from cable thieves.

Magistrate Mazibuko found him guilty of drink-driving, but gave him a light sentence of E300 or three months imprisonment because he had exceeded the legal limit by a few milligrams.

His alcohol content was 0.41 mg/l.

The legal limit is 0.38mg/l.
