NHLANGANO - A female security guard on duty had a different kind of day when she found herself having to assist a woman deliver twins, in public.

Nokuthula Simelane, of Mbulungwane and employed by Guard Alert Security assisted a woman deliver twins, both boys, yesterday at the Nhlangano Old Bus Rank next to the Nhlangano Building Society.

She was praised by many bystanders for the compassion she displayed to the woman, who was from Mashobeni.

Simelane, an Auto Teller Machine (ATM) attendant at the Nhlangano Building Society, is said to have comfortably laid the woman on the ground as other women formed a barrier around them while she assisted with the delivery.

Ntokozo Simelane, Nokuthula’s male colleague who witnessed the drama, said the heavily pregnant woman approached both of them at the ATM and requested a word with Nokuthula.

"I suspect the labour started when she was about to board a kombi to the Nhlangano Health Centre.

She leaned against the wall and shouted to my colleague that the baby was coming.

Nokuthula did not ask any questions, but laid her on the ground, and assisted with the delivery of the twins. Other women joined in and formed a barrier.

"The twins were covered in warm blankets, courtesy of kind-hearted women, and together with the mother were later rushed to the Nhlangano Health Centre in an ambulance.

"I could not assist with the delivery because I am a man.

"I say congratulations to my colleague for assisting the woman," Ntokozo said.

There were no apparent complications with the birth and sources at the Nhlangano Health Centre disclosed that the woman was then transferred, together with the twins, to the Hlatikhulu Government Hospital for an advanced medical check-up.

A comment from the Matron of the Nhlangano Health Centre, Prudence Zwane, could not be obtained as she was reported to have left for her home when this reporter called at 4pm. Nokuthula could also not be found at her post when the reporter visited the site where the woman gave birth.
