MBABANE – Maxwell Dlamini is the President of the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) despite the fact that he is currently not a student.

Dlamini was a student at the University of Swaziland’s Kwaluseni Campus in 2011 and wrote his exams while behind bars in May, after he was arrested for allegedly being found in possession of explosives.

He passed his exams for the Bachelor of Commerce Diploma.

In an interview yesterday he confirmed that he was still President of SNUS.

He said the fact that he was currently enrolled at a tertiary institution did not mean that he automatically relinquished his position as president of the union.

He said he would come back to the university to further his studies when the next academic year resumed, in August.

He said he considered himself a student who was on leave, but had not quit his studies.

He said students must be assured that he would bounce back to the university corridors on a full-time basis.

Deputy President of SNUS, Mlungisi Khumalo, also said Dlamini was legally recognised as the president of SNUS. Khumalo said he was aware of the fact that Dlamini is currently not a student.

He acknowledged that their constitution stated clearly that for a person to be a member of the union he or she must be a student, however Khumalo also said the union’s constitution further provided an option that a person could remain a member of SNUS within two years of completing his or her studies.

Khumalo noted that Dlamini was returning to the university in August to resume his studies.

SNUS supports Limkokwing students

MBABANE – The Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) is supporting the Limkokwing University of Technology students, despite losing their re-registration case at the High Court.

Dlamini said the Limkokwing students were affiliated to the union and SNUS had the responsibility of rallying behind them if they had valid concerns.

He said they were present in the High Court when the court dismissed the application of the students on the basis that the Students Representative Council (SRC) of Limkokwing had no legal standing.

Dlamini said Limkokwing students must be given the laptops they need because they are prescribed as necessities for proper and quality education.

He said the issue of Limkokwing would be dealt with by the union in future.

He said they were organising a meeting where they would deliberate on the issue as well as concerns in other universities and colleges.

He said Limkokwing students should not feel neglected by the union because it supported them and those students should know their issues would be dealt with.
