Alleged explosives suspects spend Christmas in jail

According to the Secretary of the Swaziland National Union of Students, Samkeliso Ginindza, Dlamini and Ngubane were not released on Friday because it was impossible to avail the funds on time.

Ginindza said the money they were trying to raise was being donated by their ‘international friends’ and because these international friends were far away, the whole banking process took long, although they had already deposited the money into the account of the suspects’ attorney, Mandla Mkhwanazi. He also said they were further interrupted by the start of the holidays, because most institutions close at this time.

However, Ginindza said: "The students and parents should know that they should be out this week," but he was reluctant to state a specific date. He also declined to disclose the amount that they have been able to raise, saying he was withholding the figure for ‘security reasons’.

Ginindza said the funds they are trying to raise will not only help Ngubane and Dlamini but other ‘political prisoners’ as well. He said: "Our international friends have advised us to have a sustainable fund to assist our locked up members."

Ginindza then disclosed the organisations they were working with in order to secure money for this fund. He said these organisations were Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN), Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS), Swaziland United Democratic Front (SDUF), which includes the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions (SFTU) and Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT).

He implored the nation to make contributions to this fund, saying: "Anyone can contribute to this fund, even if you support the Tinkhundla system."
