MANZINI – The Ministry of Education and Training has announced that the school calendar will now have four terms as from 2012.

Initially, the school calendar comprises three terms.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Wilson Khalalempi Ntshangase during a consultative meeting with principals and chairpersons of school committees at the Mfanyana Hall, yesterday.

Ntshangase expressed hope that the new calendar will be effected and implemented when schools open in 2012.

"We wanted the calendar to start next year, but we felt that calendars for next year are already being printed," he said. About the calendar, Ntshangase explained that they were considering that children should stay at home in June because of the cold weather.

"Another factor is that pupils are left without guidance towards the beginning of December because some teachers and principals are engaged in marking scripts," he said.

The minister assured teachers and pupils that schools will have an early break in December to allow those who will be marking more time.

Completed

Ntshangase highlighted that the first draft of the school calendar has been completed, and will be distributed to the stakeholders.

According to the draft calendar, the first term will have 63 days while the second term will have 33 days, the third term will be made up of 24 days, and the last term will have 63 days.

Most teachers who were interviewed after the meeting said they were more than happy about the new calendar.

Comments

When will SD behave like a small brother copying everything that is done by the bigger brother whether good or bad. They are copying the four term system that is being followed in SA. We in SA have realised that our kids spend lesser days and hours than their counterparts both in SADC and the world; hence they are doing badly in world competition. South Korean students spend many days and hours in class and just see where the country is right now. You only copy what is working not everything. There is nothing wrong with the three term system. SA is on the verge of changing to three term system, I bet bo Ntshangase will be reverting again.

Mndenge, your level of thinking is way above that of the likes of Wilson Ntshangase. In his time as a Minister he has achieved, and will continue achieving nothing. What he is doing will add no value to the quality of Education in the country, which is supposed to be his primary focus. That said I am not surprised by this development, its more in-line with outcomes of Sibusiso Dlamini’s tenures as PM where all that happens is the country regressing.
