MBABANE - Much acclaimed Matsapha-based rapper Kena of ‘Tjovo’ fame attained his greatest chart listing last Friday when his third radio single ‘Dlala’ peaked at the top spot.

Featuring Mbabane’s premier rapper of note, M-Forteen, Dlala became the second number one track on the charts in 2013 after toppling Amanda Mo’s ‘I like it’ which enjoyed a month-long reign on the top of the charts. Previous singles ‘Tjovo’ and ‘Sweet Memories’ also had impressive stints last year.

Commenting before crowning ‘Dlala’ the song of the week, SBIS Assistant Senior Programmes Officer and Top 20 co-presenter, Bongani ‘Bobo’ Dlamini applauded the collaborative effort of the two rappers and called the track ‘an instant banger’.

"Kena became a household name last year in the local music front after releasing that smashing hit, ‘Tjovo’, and we knew he was destined for greater heights. His style is unique and distinctively Swazi. On the other hand, M-Forteen literally wowed the nation with his numerous international collaborations last year that put Swaziland on the map, musically, so when these two artists collaborated on ‘Dlala’ we knew that we had an instant banger on our hands," explained Bobo.

Multimedia International’s General Manager and Top 20 guest presenter, Bongani ‘DJ Tizalami’ Dube described ‘Dlala’ as a party-starter of ‘a trend-setting nature’.

"For the record, both artists earned themselves Top 10 spots on the annual top 40 hits of the year in 2012 and arguably command a large following among the youth. Their single ‘Dlala’ is a definite party starter whose beat and lyrical flow is of a trend-setting nature as many a rapper would be inspired to learn one or two things as far as delivery is concerned," expounded Tizalami.

Meanwhile, reacting to news that his artist’s track has reached the coveted number one spot, Kena’s manager and publicist, Mpendulo Steven Ndwandwe said that feat came conveniently as they are preparing to release Kena’s much anticipated Extended Play titled ‘Hip Hop is Universal’. "This is a positive indicator that Kena’s EP due out March 2013 is also going to do well. We are grateful to Team Kena, fans and supporters of great music, and supporters of local artists, especially Kena’s fans," said Ndwandwe in a statement released to this publication.

Born Ayanda Tsela, Kena resides in Matsapha and records under the Arbitrator Studios stable. Most of his music is produced by Dumisani ‘DeeFlava’ Dlamini. He has worked and collaborated with several local producers and artists which include Lindelwa ‘Golden Beats’ Kunene, Ghetto Villah, Psycholution and Nosipho, to mention a few.

SBIS Top 20 chart show airs Fridays at 8pm on the English Channel.
